Local tips for Morocco's economic capital
8–9:30 am and 5–7:30 pm on weekdays: Anfa boulevard, the Corniche and the urban motorway are saturated. Expect 30–60% extra time. Shift trips or take secondary axes (Zerktouni, Ghandi).
The A3 (southern ring) and A5 bypass the centre — use them for Sidi Maârouf, Bouskoura, the airport or the Marrakech exit without crossing town.
Covered car parks (Twin Center, Morocco Mall, Anfa Place): 10–20 MAD/h. Paid on-street parking downtown (official yellow-vest attendants). Beware illegal parking: wheel clamp and 300 MAD fine.
Frequent fixed cameras on the A1 (Casa–Rabat), A7 (Casa–Marrakech) and the Corniche. Zero-tolerance on alcohol. Gendarmerie checks at every motorway exit — keep contract, licence and insurance sticker to hand.
'British-style' behaviour on some roundabouts (local right-of-way), red grand taxis that cut across, scooters everywhere. Stay firm, signal early, don't cave to horn pressure.
Diesel ~11 MAD/L, petrol ~13 MAD/L. Afriquia, Total, Shell stations are very dense in town and along A1/A7. No issue for a full tank on major axes.
Casablanca's four tram lines cross Zerktouni, Mohammed V and Ain Diab. The rail bed is camera-monitored — driving or stopping on it is an instant 400 MAD fine. At tram crossings the tram always has priority, even on a green light.
Between 12:30 and 2:30 pm on Fridays, prayer plus the couscous break empties offices at once: Maarif, Habous and the Hassan II Mosque area jam solid. Plan airport runs before noon or after 3 pm.
From Friday evening to Sunday night, on-street parking along Ain Diab is full by 7 pm. Use the Morocco Mall underground car park (free for the first 2 hours) or Anfa Place and walk the Corniche.
Dense at peak hours (8-9:30 am, 5-7:30 pm). Avoid Boulevard d'Anfa and the urban highway midday.
Use guarded lots in Maarif and downtown. Avoid wild parking — frequent towing.
Rabat 90 km (1h via A1), Marrakech 240 km (3h via A7), El Jadida 100 km (1h via A1).
Early morning (before 8 am) or evening (after 8 pm) to cross the city traffic-free.
