Driving in Rabat: what you need to know

Local tips for the administrative capital

Moderate but dense downtown traffic

Rabat flows better than Casa, but Avenue Mohammed V, Hassan II and the Agdal–Souissi axis saturate 8–9:30 am and 5–7 pm. The Hassan II bridge to Salé is a rush-hour black spot.

Tram has priority

Never cross tram tracks. Sanctions are strict. Tram traffic lights are independent — don't confuse them with car lights.

Guarded car parks

Covered car parks at Mega Mall, Bab El Had, Agdal Shopping: 5–15 MAD/h. Street attendant (official yellow vest): 5–10 MAD/hour, 20 MAD/day. Tip on exit.

Diplomatic checks

Souissi zone (embassies, royal palace): frequent gendarmerie checks. Drive without speeding or photo stops, keep papers to hand. Filming certain official buildings is strictly forbidden.

Multiple roundabouts

Rabat has many roundabouts (Bab Chellah, Bab Zaër, Al Joulane). Priority to whoever is already inside, signal early, don't stop mid-turn.

Fuel and stations

Diesel ~11 MAD/L, petrol ~13 MAD/L. Dense stations downtown and on the A1 Rabat–Casa. No issue for long trips to Fes or Meknès (A2 well-equipped).

Practical tips

Traffic

Smoother than Casa and Marrakech. Avoid the centre at office hours (8am-9:30am, 5pm-7pm). Tramway crosses Avenue Mohammed V.

Parking

Paid car parks in the centre (5-10 MAD/h). Guarded parking recommended near the medina and Kasbah. Free parking along Salé beach.

Main routes

Casablanca 90 km (1h via A1), Meknes 150 km (1h45 via A2), Fes 210 km (2h45 via A2), Tangier 250 km (2h30 via A1/A4 and TGV).

Best times

Morning for the Kasbah (soft light and fewer people), late afternoon for Chellah. Heavy traffic 5pm-7pm on Avenue Hassan II.

Recommandation KARVYX : Mild oceanic climate year-round, similar to Casablanca. Best months are April–June and September–October: clear skies, 20–25°C, mild ocean. Demand stays moderate thanks to the city's administrative nature — outside international conferences and diaspora school holidays, choice remains wide.
