Driving in Marrakech: what you need to know

Local tips for the ochre city and its surroundings

Scooters and horse-drawn carts

Scooters everywhere, calèches on main axes around the medina, cyclists without lights at night. Stay flexible, keep distance, use a brief horn tap at blind junctions.

Medina closed to cars

The medina is pedestrian-only (residents excepted). Head for the parking gates: Bab Doukkala, Bab Jdid, Foucauld, Bab Robb. Never follow a self-appointed 'guide' offering to park you inside.

Guarded car parks

At the medina gates, the attendant charges 20–30 MAD/day and 2–5 MAD overnight. Tip on exit (5–10 MAD). Illegal parking usually ends with a wheel clamp and a fine.

Checkpoints and speed cameras

Frequent fixed speed cameras on the A7 (Marrakech–Casa) and A4 (Marrakech–Essaouira). Gendarmerie checks at village entries/exits. Always keep rental contract, licence, registration and insurance sticker to hand.

Roundabouts and priority

In theory, priority to the left (whoever is already inside). In practice, drive like locals: anticipate, commit confidently, but stay ready to brake.

Fuel and stations

Diesel ~11 MAD/L, petrol ~13 MAD/L (indicative). Afriquia, Total and Shell stations are dense in town and along the A7. Fill up before the High-Atlas passes (Tizi n'Tichka) and before Ouarzazate — few stations beyond.

Practical tips

Traffic

Dense around the medina, scooters everywhere. Don't drive inside the medina — cars are not allowed.

Parking

Use guarded lots at the medina gates (Bab Doukkala, Foucauld). 20-30 MAD per day.

Main routes

Essaouira 190 km (2h30 via A4), Casablanca 240 km (3h via A7), Ouarzazate 200 km (4h via Tizi n'Tichka), Agadir 250 km (3h via A7).

Best timing

Early morning for the medina (cool), midday for gardens. Heavy traffic 5-7 pm around Bab Jdid.

Recommandation KARVYX : The best months are March, May, September and October: ideal climate (22–28°C), mid-range prices, wide choice. Avoid July–August (up to 45°C, though Agafay and the Atlas stay bearable). In low season (Nov–Feb) enjoy rock-bottom prices, but pack a layer for the evenings.
