Advice specific to Rif mountain roads
A fully pedestrian medina
You cannot drive into the blue medina: everyone parks at the entrances (Bab El Ain, place El Makhzen). Lanes are steep and cobbled, so wear suitable shoes and arrange a porter or trolley for luggage.
Winding mountain roads
The N2 and regional Rif roads are a chain of bends: real journey times often exceed estimates. Avoid driving at night (limited lighting, stray animals) and overtake carefully.
Guarded car parks
Several supervised car parks surround the medina, with rates posted on site. In high season they fill up by late morning: arrive early or use your accommodation's space if it has one.
Checks and speed cameras
Gendarmerie checks are frequent on the Tangier, Tetouan and Ouazzane roads. Keep your rental contract, licence and registration to hand and respect speed limits (regular mobile cameras).
Mountain weather
In winter and spring, rain and mist can cut visibility in the Rif: adapt your speed and check the forecast before setting off. In summer the altitude (~600 m) moderates the heat.
