What every foreign driver should know before hitting the road
Tangier–Agadir motorways in excellent condition, 120 km/h allowed. National roads good between major cities, poorer south and in the mountains. Bilingual Arabic/French signage.
Red grand taxis that cut across, scooters everywhere, carts on the outskirts. Drive firmly, signal early, don't yield to horn pressure — it's the local norm, nothing personal.
At motorway exits and city entrances. Always carry: rental contract, licence, passport, up-to-date insurance sticker. Zero tolerance for alcohol, many fixed speed cameras (Casa–Rabat, Casa–Marrakech).
Yellow-vested wardens, official or not, everywhere in cities. Count on 5–10 MAD on exit (2 MAD for short stops). A useful service that saves you from the municipal clamp.
Diesel ~11 MAD/L, petrol ~13 MAD/L (2025 indicative). Afriquia, Total, Shell stations dense in cities and on motorways. Fill up before isolated areas (Atlas, desert).
Livestock, unlit pedestrians, damaged surfaces, lightless trucks. Motorways remain safe at night; national roads and mountains, not. Plan long stages during daylight.
Most Moroccan fleets are manual. Automatics (less than 20% of supply) cost 30–50% more and must be booked 2–3 weeks ahead in high season.
Modern motorway network (Tangier–Agadir). Low tolls: Casa–Rabat 25 MAD, Casa–Marrakech 75 MAD, Casa–Tangier 130 MAD. Bring cash (few card terminals).
In every city, yellow-vested wardens watch street parking (5–10 MAD on exit). A useful service — avoids the wheel clamp and municipal pound.
March–June and Sept–Oct: ideal climate everywhere. Summer best on north and coast; inland (Marrakech, Fes) hits 40°C. Winter: skiing possible at Oukaïmeden.
Weather, crowds and prices month by month — national view
Mild 15–18°C coast, Atlas skiing
Low season outside New Year, rock-bottom prices.
Ideal 20–26°C, Easter
Easter peak, book Marrakech early.
40°C+ inland, mild coast
MRE peak, avoid inland Marrakech.
Ideal 22–28°C
Excellent climate/price/crowd balance.
Recommandation KARVYX : Morocco can be visited year-round, but the best windows are March–June and September–October: ideal climate everywhere, moderate prices, no crowds. Summer is pleasant in the north and on the coast, but inland (Marrakech, Fes, Merzouga) hits 40°C. Winter is mild in the south (Agadir, Marrakech) and allows skiing at Oukaïmeden. Book early for Christmas, Easter and July–August.
