Driving in Fes: what you need to know

Local tips for the spiritual capital

Fully pedestrian medina

Fes el-Bali (great UNESCO medina) and Fes el-Jdid are impenetrable by car. Alleys are sometimes under a metre wide. Park compulsorily at the official gates.

Car parks at the medina gates

Bab Boujloud (blue gate, most touristy), Bab Ftouh, R'cif, Alaouites square: 20–30 MAD/day, 5 MAD overnight. Tip on exit (5–10 MAD). Refuse any 'guide' offering to park closer.

New town and sloping boulevards

New town (Dar Dbibegh, Champs de courses) on a slight slope. Dense traffic on Hassan II boulevard and Mohammed V avenue at rush hour (8–9:30 am, 5–7 pm). Paid on-street parking (5–10 MAD/h).

Mountain roads (Ifrane, Rif)

N8 to Ifrane and the Middle Atlas: hairpins, frequent winter fog, possible snow Dec–Mar. N13 to Chefchaouen: winding, plan breaks.

Speed cameras and checkpoints

Fixed cameras on the A2 (Fes–Meknès–Rabat). Gendarmerie checks at every city entry/exit. Always keep rental contract, licence, registration and insurance sticker to hand.

Fuel and stations

Diesel ~11 MAD/L, petrol ~13 MAD/L. Dense stations in town and along A2. Fill up before the Middle-Atlas passes (Ifrane, Azrou) and especially before the Merzouga road — rare beyond Midelt.

Practical tips

Traffic

Medina fully pedestrian (cars forbidden). Dense traffic in Ville Nouvelle during office hours. Donkeys and carts remain the only 'vehicles' in the souks.

Parking

Use guarded lots at the medina gates (Bab Boujloud, Bab Ftouh, R'cif): 20-30 MAD/day.

Main routes

Meknes 60 km (1h via A2), Rabat 200 km (2h45), Tangier 360 km (3h45 via A2), Chefchaouen 200 km (3h30), Casablanca 290 km (3h30).

Best timing

Early morning for the medina (calm souks), mid-afternoon for madrasas. Heavy traffic 5-7 pm on Avenue Hassan II.
