Advice specific to the City of the Trade Winds
A fully pedestrian medina
You cannot drive into the medina: everything is parked at the gates (Bab Sbaa, Bab Marrakech, Bab Doukkala). Allow 5-10 minutes on foot to your riad, or use a luggage trolley at the car park.
Coastal N1 to Agadir
A scenic road through the argan forest, winding in places between Tamanar and Cape Rhir. Take care at night: stray animals and unlit tractors.
Guarded car parks
Several supervised car parks surround the medina and the port, with rates displayed on site (day and night differ). In high season, arrive early: they fill up fast.
Checkpoints and speed cameras
Gendarmerie checks are frequent at the city entrances and on the Marrakech road. Keep the rental contract, licence and registration to hand, and respect speed limits (fixed and mobile cameras).
Local traffic
Traffic is calm compared with the big cities, but watch for scooters, bicycles and horse carts around the medina, and pedestrians on Avenue de l'Istiqlal in the evening.
Fuel
Petrol stations sit at the Marrakech exit and along the Agadir road. Prices are set at the pump and change over time: check the display in station. Fill up before heading down the coast to Sidi Kaouki or Safi.
