Driving in Tangier: what you need to know

Local tips for the gateway to the strait

Dense downtown traffic

Boulevard Pasteur, Grand Socco and the descent to the port saturate on Saturday nights and ferry days. Frequent easterly wind (chergui) — grip the wheel firmly on the corniche.

Port access and Tangier Med

Tangier city port: direct access from downtown, frequent jams. Tangier Med (45 km east): A4 motorway then ring road, ~40 min. Follow 'Port Tanger Med', not 'Tanger', at forks.

Guarded car parks

Street attendants around Grand Socco, Kasbah and Malabata: 5–10 MAD/hour, 20 MAD/day. Covered car parks at Tangier City Mall and Socco Alto: 5–15 MAD/h. Avoid illegal parking on the corniche.

Speed cameras and customs checks

Fixed cameras on the A1 (Tangier–Rabat) and A4 (Mediterranean ring). Reinforced customs checks near Tangier Med and Fnideq (Ceuta enclave). Always keep contract, licence and registration to hand.

Roundabouts and two-wheelers

Many downhill roundabouts (place de France, place du 9 Avril). Scooters, mopeds and cyclists everywhere. Anticipate, signal early, don't cave to horn pressure.

Fuel and stations

Diesel ~11 MAD/L, petrol ~13 MAD/L. Dense stations in town, on A1 to Rabat, A4 to Al Hoceima. Fill up before the Chefchaouen road (N2 mountain) — rarer beyond Tetouan.

Practical tips

Traffic

Dense traffic in the centre (medina, Grand Socco) and at rush hour (8am-9:30am, 5pm-7pm). Modern A1 and A4 motorways.

Parking

Paid car parks in the centre (5-10 MAD/h). Guarded parking recommended near the medina and Kasbah. Free at Achakar beach.

Main routes

Airport 12 km, Cape Spartel 14 km, Tetouan 60 km (1h), Chefchaouen 120 km (2h30), Rabat 250 km (2h30), Casablanca 350 km (3h30).

Best times

Morning for the Kasbah (soft light and quiet), late afternoon for Cape Spartel. Avoid 5pm-7pm in the centre.
