Local tips for the gateway to the strait
Dense downtown traffic
Boulevard Pasteur, Grand Socco and the descent to the port saturate on Saturday nights and ferry days. Frequent easterly wind (chergui) — grip the wheel firmly on the corniche.
Port access and Tangier Med
Tangier city port: direct access from downtown, frequent jams. Tangier Med (45 km east): A4 motorway then ring road, ~40 min. Follow 'Port Tanger Med', not 'Tanger', at forks.
Guarded car parks
Street attendants operate around Grand Socco, Kasbah and Malabata, with rates set locally. Covered car parks are also available at Tangier City Mall and Socco Alto. Avoid illegal parking on the corniche.
Speed cameras and customs checks
Fixed cameras on the A1 (Tangier–Rabat) and A4 (Mediterranean ring). Reinforced customs checks near Tangier Med and Fnideq (Ceuta enclave). Always keep contract, licence and registration to hand.
