KARVYX — Drive Your Choice
Payment guide — 2026

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Morocco?

Short answer: not always. Here are the payment types Moroccan agencies accept, the deposit amounts by vehicle class, and every document you need to walk out with the keys.

Key insight: About 70% of KARVYX-verified local agencies accept a debit card when you take full-coverage insurance. International brands (Hertz, Avis, Sixt) still require a credit card.

Accepted payment types

Which payment methods work in Morocco

Every method below is used in the Moroccan market. The acceptance rate depends on the agency tier and your insurance choice.

Credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex)

Accepted everywhere

The default option. Deposit is pre-authorized (blocked, not charged) on the driver's card. Amex is accepted by international brands but refused by ~30% of local Moroccan agencies — Visa and Mastercard are the safest bets.

Debit card (Visa Debit, Mastercard Debit)

Accepted by many local agencies · Rare at international brands

Around 70% of KARVYX-verified local agencies accept a debit card, usually with full-coverage insurance (zero-excess) as a condition. The deposit is either really charged and refunded 2–5 business days later, or blocked if your bank supports pre-auth on debit.

Cash (MAD, EUR, USD)

For the rental itself · Never for the deposit

You can pay the rental fee in dirhams, euros or dollars at most local agencies. But the security deposit always needs a card — cash-only deposits are not offered by reputable agencies in Morocco.

Prepaid cards, Revolut, N26, Wise

Case-by-case — always confirm before booking

Some KARVYX-partner agencies accept Revolut Metal, N26 You, and Wise Debit if the balance covers the deposit. Prepaid gift cards (non-reloadable) are almost always refused. Confirm on WhatsApp before your pickup date.

Security deposit (caution)

How much deposit is blocked on your card

Indicative amounts in USD (actual charge is in MAD at 1 USD ≈ 9.9 MAD). Deposit is pre-authorized on a credit card, or really charged then refunded 2–5 business days later on a debit card.

Economy (Dacia Sandero, Hyundai i10)
$280 – $400
Lowest deposit tier — most common car category.
Compact (Renault Clio, Peugeot 208)
$350 – $500
Slightly higher; automatic variants cost more.
SUV (Dacia Duster, Renault Captur)
$500 – $700
Full-coverage insurance strongly recommended.
Premium / Automatic (Mercedes A-Class, BMW X1)
$700 – $1,200
Credit card almost always required at this tier.

Never pay a deposit in cash. Reputable Moroccan agencies always block or charge the caution on a card and issue a signed deposit slip. A cash-only deposit is a red flag — walk away.

Documents required

What you must bring to the pickup counter

Missing any of these and the agency can legally refuse the rental without a refund. Prepare originals — photocopies alone are not enough.

Valid driving licence

EU, UK, US, Canadian, Australian, GCC and most African licences accepted. Must have been held for at least 12 months. Under-25 drivers pay a young-driver surcharge of $5–$10/day.

Passport or Moroccan CIN

Passport is mandatory for non-residents. Moroccan residents can use a national ID card (CIN). Both sides are photocopied and attached to the contract.

Card in the main driver's name

The card used for the deposit must match the name on the driving licence. Cards held by a spouse, parent or company are refused, even with a signed authorization letter.

International driving permit (optional)

Not required if your licence is in Latin script. Recommended for licences in Arabic, Cyrillic, Chinese, Japanese or Thai scripts to avoid police discussions during roadside checks.

Renting without a credit card

Six rules to secure the booking with a debit card

  1. 1

Filter for 'debit card accepted' when browsing KARVYX — the badge appears on the agency card.

  2. 2

Add zero-excess (full-coverage) insurance at booking. It is the single condition that flips a debit-card refusal into an acceptance.

  3. 3

Make sure your bank has raised the daily debit limit: the deposit + rental total must fit in one transaction.

  4. 4

Bring a screenshot of your available balance in the banking app; some agencies ask for proof before charging.

  5. 5

If you have any credit card at all — even a low limit — carry it as backup. It saves a booking if the debit-card check fails at the counter.

  6. 6

Never accept a cash-only deposit. Reputable agencies always issue a written deposit slip signed by both parties.
