1. Separate driving entitlement from rental conditions
Article 2 of Law No. 52-05 allows a foreign driver on a temporary stay in Morocco to drive with a valid foreign licence for a maximum of 1 year from the start of that temporary stay in Morocco. This concerns the right to drive; it does not set every agency's commercial rental conditions.
Do not automatically extend this rule to moving to Morocco, a longer stay or another situation. If you fall outside this scope, check the applicable rule with the competent authorities. Approval from a rental company is not a substitute for that check.
Age, licence holding periods and document requirements must be checked with the agency; no minimum shared by all rental companies is stated here.
2. Have your licence checked before booking
Note the issuing country, validity dates, licence category and the name shown. Explain your situation to the agency rather than assuming it can be inferred from your nationality or the alphabet used on the document.
An international driving permit should not be described as always required or always unnecessary. Check the official rules applicable to your licence and, separately, the rental company's requirements for the intended offer.
- “Do you accept this licence for this offer and vehicle?”
- “Do you require an international permit, a translation or another supporting document? In which format?”
- “Is there an age or licence holding requirement for each driver?”
3. Request an exact list of documents
Ask the agency for a written list rather than relying on one found elsewhere. For each item, clarify whose name it must bear, the accepted format and when it must be presented.
Identification, a booking reference or evidence relating to the payment method may be topics to check; this list of questions does not mean all of them are legally or routinely required.
- “Which documents do I need at collection, and which do you need beforehand?”
- “Do you require originals? Do you accept a digital document or a copy?”
- “Which names must match across the booking, contract, licence and payment method?”
- “Which channel provided by your agency should I use to send a sensitive document?”
4. Prepare paperwork for every driver
If someone else will drive, do not assume your own paperwork covers them. Ask how that person must be declared, which checks apply and how their permission to drive will be recorded in the contract.
Keep the replies with the offer reference and your dates. If the vehicle or agency changes, have the requirements reconfirmed instead of carrying an earlier approval across.
Hypothetical example: two travellers plan to share the driving. They ask the agency to check both licences and explain how both drivers will be recorded; they do not infer permission for both from the booking holder's name alone.
5. Check the paperwork when collecting the keys
Present the agreed documents and compare the contract with the booking: identity, authorised drivers, vehicle, dates and locations. If a name, condition or document request differs from the earlier confirmation, clarify it before signing.
Ask for a contract copy in the format the agency provides and keep relevant correspondence. Signing the contract and checking the vehicle's condition are separate tasks: complete paperwork does not replace an inspection.
- Check that everyone who will drive is authorised under the contract.
- Ask for an explanation of an additional document or a changed condition without assuming the reason.
- Identify the agency contact for questions during the rental.
6. Keep useful records during the rental and at return
Keep the documents required under the contract accessible and ask what to do if one is lost or the intended driver changes. Do not automatically send an entire file when only one piece of information is requested.
At return, keep a record of the vehicle handover, the contract copy and correspondence relating to any later request. This guide does not establish the agency's retention periods or procedures; ask for clarification where needed.
Your paperwork before departure
- Legal position checked for your situation and licence valid throughout the stay.
- Documents and formats confirmed for the chosen offer.
- Requirements clarified for every driver, not just the booking holder.
- Matching names and the payment method clarified.
- Booking reference, agency replies and contact details kept.
- Outstanding questions resolved before signing.
Frequently asked questions
- Is my foreign licence enough to rent a car?
- The right to drive during a temporary stay and the agency's acceptance are separate matters. Check the legal position for your situation, then the agency's requirements for your licence, vehicle and every driver.
- Should I get an international driving permit?
- This guide does not give a universal answer. Check the official rules applicable to your licence and separately ask the rental company what it requires for the chosen offer; nationality or the alphabet on the licence alone cannot settle the question.
- Will a photo of my licence be accepted?
- Do not assume so. Ask which originals, copies or digital formats the agency accepts and when. This guide does not confirm that a photo legally replaces a driving licence.
- Can a second driver use my paperwork?
- Ask for checks for that person and for the arrangements to list them in the contract. Approval relating to the booking holder should not be treated as permission for someone else.
- What if the agency asks for a different document at collection?
- Show the confirmation you received and ask what changed, why and with what consequences. Clarify your options and the applicable terms before signing; no particular outcome is guaranteed.
Sources and scope
The licence rule refers to Article 2 of Law No. 52-05, Official Bulletin No. 5874, p. 1646, already used in KARVYX guides. The proposed steps are practical checks, not additional obligations. The document list and its acceptance must still be confirmed with the agency.
